Southern Comfort Black is a bolder, more robust whiskey liqueur that emphasizes a stronger whiskey presence and less sweetness than the original Southern Comfort. It is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof), a higher alcohol content than the classic version, which is typically 35% ABV.
Key Characteristics
- Flavor Profile: It retains the iconic Southern Comfort essence of fruit and spices (such as peach, orange, vanilla, and cinnamon) but introduces a more prominent, complex, and full-bodied whiskey taste. Tasting notes often include dark fruit, caramel, toasted or charred oak, and warming spices. Some drinkers also note hints of blackberry, cloves, or smoke.
- Aroma: The nose features a pleasant sweetness with notes of caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak, followed by fruit and spice accents.
- Finish: It provides a smooth, warm, and lingering finish with an elegant spiciness and a satisfying whiskey bite.
- Use: Southern Comfort Black is designed to be versatile, suitable for sipping neat, over ice, or as a base in classic whiskey cocktails like an Old Fashioned or Southern Manhattan. It also pairs well with simple mixers such as ginger ale or lemonade.
Background
Southern Comfort was originally created in New Orleans in 1874 by bartender M.W. Heron, who blended whiskey with fruits and spices to make it smoother. Southern Comfort Black returns to this “whiskey-forward” approach, using a proprietary blend of whiskey sourced from Sazerac’s (the current brand owner) reserves
