Officially re-launched in the beginning of 2013, Tanqueray’s limited edition Malacca is a sweet, spicy gin with increased levels of citrus. This is not dissimilar to some of the old-fashioned styles of Old Tom gin, and it works very well in cocktails.
- Key Botanicals: In addition to the four classic Tanqueray botanicals (juniper, coriander, angelica, and licorice), Malacca incorporates a complex blend including peppercorns, rose petals, cloves, and cardamom.
- Aroma and Taste: The nose is rich with notes of citrus zest (grapefruit and lemon), warm spices (allspice, ginger, cinnamon), and a hint of vanilla or creamy root beer. The palate is smooth and complex, with an initial burst of fruit and citrus giving way to a warm, spicy, and long-lasting finish.
- Gin & Tonic: Best served with a premium tonic water and garnished with pink peppercorns and a sprig of fresh mint to accentuate its spicy notes.
- Cocktails: It works exceptionally well in classic cocktails that benefit from a richer, spicier gin, such as the Pegu Club, a Tom Collins, or a gin Old Fashioned.
- Original Release: First introduced in the late 1990s as a lighter alternative to Tanqueray London Dry.
- Discontinuation and Revival: It was discontinued around 2001 due to insufficient demand but became a highly sought-after “unicorn” spirit among mixologists. In response to the strong demand, it was officially re-launched as a limited edition in early 2013 and has seen subsequent limited releases since then.
