Frangelico is an Italian liqueur flavoured with toasted wild hazelnuts from the north of Italy, cocoa, vanilla and other ingredients.
- Flavor Profile:Â The dominant flavor comes from the local “Tonda Gentile” hazelnuts, which are known for their sweetness and lack of bitterness when toasted. This is blended with extracts of coffee, cocoa seeds, and vanilla, creating a complex, well-balanced golden elixir. It is often described as having “Nutella vibes”.
- Appearance:Â It has a clear, pale gold color.
- Alcohol Content:Â Frangelico is typically 20% Alcohol by Volume (ABV) or 40 proof.
- Bottle Design:Â The distinctive bottle is shaped like a monk’s habit, cinched at the waist with a cord, as a tribute to its supposed monastic origins.Â
- Neat or On the Rocks:Â It is traditionally served as a digestif (an after-dinner drink) by itself or with ice.
- With Coffee:Â It can be poured into coffee or an espresso for a flavorful after-dinner treat.
- In Cocktails:Â It is a key ingredient in many cocktails, adding a rich, nutty flavor. Popular mixes include the “Nutty Irishman” (with Irish cream and coffee), Frangelico and soda, or Frangelico with a squeeze of fresh lime over ice.
- In Desserts:Â It is also used in cooking and baking to add a hazelnut kick to various recipes.Â
