- Appearance: Crystal clear.
- Aroma: Woody and bark-like, with notes of angelica, and subtle hints of spices like ginger and lavender.
- Taste: Bright and juniper-forward initially, with a clean, classic gin taste.
- Mid-palate: Notes of caraway, coriander, and lemon rind (which some speculate is from coriander seed, since there are no citrus botanicals).
- Finish: A warming and lingering finish with notes of spice and herbs like lemongrass, with a slightly bitter undertone.
- No citrus botanicals: The recipe intentionally omits citrus peel to encourage drinkers to add their own garnish, like lemon or lime.
- Herbal and spicy profile: The gin’s flavor is built on a foundation of traditional botanicals like angelica root, nutmeg, sage, and rosemary, which gives it a distinct herbal and spicy quality.
- Versatile for cocktails: Its classic style makes it a reliable choice for many gin-based cocktails.
- Positive feedback: Many customers praise its classic taste, smooth finish, and value, considering it a great mixing gin or good for sipping on its own.
- Mixed feedback: Some reviewers find it a bit too subtle or “fleeting,” while others appreciate its understated quality.
This London Dry Gin, repackaged and rejuvenated under new ownership in 2013, takes its name from Boodle’s gentleman’s club in St. James’s, London and is now produced at the Greenalls distillery.
Famous members of Boodle’s gentleman’s club included former Prime Minister Winston Churchill and James Bond author Ian Fleming, which of course makes Boodles an obvious choice for a Vesper.
Churchill also enjoyed gin however and Boodles may have been his favourite brand. I read a story the other day of how Winston added so little vermouth to his Gin Martinis that sometimes a mere glance in the direction of France would suffice!
