Thomas Dakin Manchester Gin (70cl , 42%)

Made with eleven botanicals including juniper, orange peel, English coriander, angelica, cubeb pepper and liquorice as well as “a hint of red cole” aka horseradish! It’s named after Thomas Dakin, who began producing gin in Warrington in the second half of the 18th century, founding what would later become Greenall’s. He was a pioneer who made gin of a surprising quality for the day, and who is rightly celebrated.

Thomas Dakin Gin is a savory, juniper-forward London Dry Gin (42% ABV) that is praised for its bold, botanical complexity. Distilled with a historic 1761 recipe, it features 11 botanicals including sweet orange, grapefruit, and a unique infusion of red cole (horseradish).
The Flavor Profile
    • Aroma: Pungent and aromatic with prominent citrus, earthy angelica root, and a distinctly spicy, piney juniper.
    • Taste: Bone dry and intensely peppery. The horseradish (red cole) adds a warm, savory spice that lingers on the palate, balanced by bright notes of sweet orange and grapefruit.
    • Finish: Long, warming, and highly spiced.

Reviews and Consensus
Reviewers are generally divided based on whether they prefer traditional gins or bolder, savory spirits. Traditionalists highly rate its complexity and recommend it as a premium gin that stands up well to a rich tonic. Conversely, some gin enthusiasts on platforms like Distiller find the horseradish notes exceptionally strong and polarizing.
Perfect Serve Recommendation
To mellow the peppery spice and highlight the citrus botanicals, bartenders and mixologists recommend the following “perfect serve”:
  • 50ml Thomas Dakin Gin
  • 125ml Premium Tonic Water (such as a light tonic)
  • A generous amount of ice
  • Fresh orange peel twist
  • A sprig of fresh coriander to garnish
